The little café in Kirkwood was one of Nicole’s favorites, but today the food might as well have been sawdust. Though she was barely halfway through her club sandwich, Nicole couldn’t force herself to eat another bite.

She shoved the plate aside and heaved a heavy sigh, a sudden tightness gripping her chest.

“What’s the matter, honey?” Celia reached across the table and took her granddaughter’s hand. “You haven’t been yourself all day. And don’t tell me nothing is wrong because I know better. First you couldn’t find anything you liked while we shopped and now you’ve barely touched your lunch.”

“It’s nothing, Gram.” Nicole blinked back tears at her grandmother’s concern. “You wouldn’t understand anyway.”

“You just try me,” Celia said. “I understand more than you know.”

Nicole shook her head. Her grandmother was a wonderful woman but she’d always been a staunch supporter of her son-in-law.

“It’s about your father and the nanny, isn’t it?” Her grandmother sat back in her chair and gazed thoughtfully at Nicole. “You’re worried about the two of them ‘hooking up.”’

The words sounded so strange coming from her grandmother that Nicole had to smile. But the unpleasant reality of the situation pulled the smile from her lips.

“According to her, they’ve already ‘hooked up,”’ Nicole said, unable to keep the bitterness from her tone as she remembered Lori’s boastful words in that coffee shop. “They’ve already had sex.”

“What?” Celia Barrett dropped her cup into its china saucer with a clatter. “She told you that she and your father—”

“—were having a torrid love affair,” Nicole interrupted, finishing her grandmother’s sentence. “Actually, she didn’t tell me. She was bragging about it to someone else and I overheard. And the ‘torrid love affair’ bit are her words, not mine.”

“I can’t say that I’m surprised your father is starting to date again.” The older woman signaled the waiter for the check.

Nicole stared, amazed her grandmother could be so calm. She didn’t even seem upset that her son-in-law was having an affair with his children’s nanny.

“The problem is they aren’t just dating. They’re—”

“I know, my dear.” Celia raised her hand, stopping Nicole from repeating her story. “Let me continue. Though I’m not surprised your father is dating, I would be surprised to find out he’s involved in a physical relationship, be—”

“But Lori said—”

“Nicole.” Her grandmother’s tone was firm. “What have I told you about interrupting your elders?”

“Sorry, Gram.” Nicole lowered her gaze, her hands twisting the napkin in her lap. She should have known better than to think her grandmother would be on her side.

“Honey, look at me.” Though her grandmother’s tone might be no-nonsense, the older woman’s eyes were filled with understanding. “I understand how concerned you are, but I have to tell you the Drew McCashlin I know would never engage in a meaningless affair with one of his employees. He may not attend church anymore but he’s always held himself and others to a strict moral code. I can’t see any reason he’d abandon those beliefs now.”

Nicole waited a minute before speaking, wanting to be absolutely sure her grandmother had finished.
